It is advisable to consider purchasing a Western Civilization textbook for additional study before taking the CLEP exams. You can find inexpensive texts on Amazon, by purchasing used, previous editions.

Read the lectures from the History of Western Civilization website. Study the flashcards. Choose from some or all of the additional resources to round out your studies. The study questions are mostly essay format, which can help you judge your retention of individual topics, based on how well you are able to answer the questions. Again, it is recommended that you purchase a textbook to help with your studies. The ones listed above are combined volumes covering Western Civilization 1 & 2. You can also look for titles covering either one.
