A word about Math...Mathematics seems to be the one subject, above all others, that sends people into a complete tailspin. This doesn't particularly surprise me. Our public school system, responsible for educating the vast majority of American citizens, seems willfully determined to teach math in ways designed to leave students lost and confused. By the time many students have reached high school, they fully believe they "can't do math," and often develop an outright phobia toward it.
It doesn't have to be that way for your child. (Or for you, for that matter!) In this amazing internet age, it really is possible to home educate children using nothing more than a public library and free resources found on the internet. There are many sites dedicated to free education - so many, in fact, sometimes it can be overwhelming. |
If you've read the About Me page, or even know me personally, you know at least two things. One, that my own family has homeschooled for years on a tiny, tiny budget. And two, I tend to always say, "Don't pay for that. You can use this instead, for free!" I have been finding and using free resources for my children for over ten years now.
There's a point to all this. Really!
If math doesn't come naturally for you or your child, do not give up and certainly do not think you can't do it, or worse, that you're "stupid." When I decided to get a degree from Thomas Edison State College, it was with the ultimate goal of becoming certified to teach mathematics and sciences here in Florida, for grades 5 - 9. I hate hearing people say math is too hard for them, because while very few people will ever be like the math genius on that television program Numbers, basic arithmetic through algebra and geometry is doable for most of us. It just requires being taught in a logical, sensible way.
Awhile back, I stumbled across the Learn Math Fast System. I spent some time pouring over the website and looking at the sample pages and at some point, I'm pretty sure I actually shouted out loud, "Yes! This is how math should be taught!" Yes. I really am that impressed, and if you do know me personally, the third thing you probably know about me is how hard it is to impress me with anything.
So this is me, the "Find it for Free/Do it Yourself!" mom saying, if you need math help and you buy any one curriculum anywhere in your homeschooling journey, this should be it. I realize that $240 might seem like a lot, but the system's author does offer a few payment plans, and keep in mind you are getting a complete math curriculum for that price. Use this for K-12, and you should have no problems working your way quickly through ALEKS math for college credits, if you should choose.
Even if you aren't particularly struggling with math, if you are looking for a math curriculum, I still absolutely recommend this one. Take some time to really look over the website and see what it's all about. Read the testimonials. They are glowing for a reason!
